ZATV #001 - How to make real South African biltong
Posted by The ZA Show on 08 Jan 2007 at 02:08 pm | Tagged as: podcasts, video podcasts
It’s FINALLY here in time for 2007. The first episode of ZA TV.
Here is a 12min video podcast presented by Glen Verran on how to make your own South African biltong. The aim of this video is to make the process of making biltong as simple and easy to follow as possible. Believe me, the results are worth it.
With many thanks to Jan Folmer for all his effort and hard work behind the camera, in post production and all the great ideas.
Based on the box design and technique from Aris Stathakis at http://www.biltongbox.com
Please comment and let me know what you think. Also let me know if you’ve made your own biltong too.
The video is in Apple QuickTime format. (m4v).

What a cool vidcast ! And now we see what you look like as well !
I enjoyed it very much – made me a bit homesick (once again) – and it looked very professional! Makes me wonder if we should maybe do a vidcast on the fly as well.
Congrats Glen (and Jan) on a job well done,
BUT one question (or comment) if I may . . . . where is Bridgitte (in her bikini ?), and the dogs, and a chase in a car (like all blockbuster movies ?)
Congrats on the vid Glen!
Well done an professional Glen. I’ll be giving this link to all my customers.

Great VIDEO… nice to see some more people out there LIVING and LOVING life and reaching out to show the world what we made off… and YES NOW I WANT A PIECE OF BILTONG!
Your measurements don’t add up.
Fantastic video! I was going to make my own box over Christmas and Aris’ plans were great but now his site doesn’t actually show you how to do it, just has pictures of the finished product so this video is great!
South Australia doesn’t have anywhere good to buy biltong so hopefully I will finally get to have some again in 4-7days!
Llewellyn, you are right that the numbers seem a bit off. I’m going with these measurements. Because we want the box to fit snugly and different places will have different thickness of MDF (I assume) I have put in the calculations and not the measurements I will specifically be using.
Sides and door = 1mX0.38m MDF
Back= 1mX0.38m(minus 2xthickness of side panels) Hardboard
Top and bottom = 0.38mX0.4m MDF
Shelf = 0.38m(minus 2xthickness of side panels and minus 0.01m for easy removal)X0.38(minus thickness of back panel) Hardboard
Rails = 0.38X0.018 MDF
So for example, if your side panels are 1.5cm thick and your back panel is 1cm thick then your shelf will be 0.38-(2×0.015)-0.01=0.34m and 0.38-0.01=0.37m so dimensions are 0.34mX0.37m
Hope what I’m trying to say makes sense.
With these measurements the back panel will sit just inside the side panels so it should look roughly like this looking down from the top without the top panel on.

So it decided that the many spaces I used to draw my picture were a mistake and it removed them. Check out either of the websites below. Just replace with . and they should work.
